Who Justin Gaethje is and where he stands now
Justin Gaethje is the undisputed UFC lightweight champion, a title he won at 37 by stopping Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 on 14 June 2026. As of 30 September 2026 his record is 28 wins and 5 losses, according to the UFC athlete page. The UFC rankings updated on 29 September list him as the lightweight champion and number three in the men's pound-for-pound rankings.
He was born on 14 November 1988 in Safford, Arizona, stands 5ft 11in with a 70 inch reach, and goes by "The Highlight". Of his 28 wins, 21 came by knockout or TKO, one by submission and six by decision, per his Wikipedia profile. He also holds the UFC record for Fight of the Night bonuses with 11.
How Gaethje fights
Gaethje is a wrestler who chooses to fight like a brawler. His weapons are heavy punches, punishing leg kicks, and a willingness to stand in front of people and trade. In his Freedom 250 win he leaned on jabs, leg kicks and clinch work, according to Cageside Press.
The wrestling is real. He won two Arizona state titles at Safford High School, and at the University of Northern Colorado he became an NCAA Division I All-American in 2010, placing seventh at 157 pounds. That background is why he can afford to trade on the feet: he has the wrestling to fall back on.
His coach since 2011 has been Trevor Wittman. Together they have built a fighter who wins through accumulation: leg kicks that slow an opponent, then shots that finish. Twenty-one knockouts in 28 wins shows how often that works.
The cost is that he takes damage. Three of his five losses are knockouts or stoppages (Eddie Alvarez, Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway), and the other two are submissions to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira in title fights. Opponents who beat him have either hit harder or held him down.
The road to here
After wrestling, Gaethje went into MMA and signed with the World Series of Fighting on 2 December 2012. He won the first WSOF lightweight title on 18 January 2014 against Richard Patishnock and defended it five times, the last against Luiz Firmino on 31 December 2016.
He made his UFC debut on 7 July 2017 with a second-round TKO of Michael Johnson. Losses to Alvarez at UFC 218 in December 2017 and to Poirier at UFC on Fox 29 in April 2018 followed.
The first big title moment came at UFC 249 on 9 May 2020, when he beat Tony Ferguson by fifth-round TKO for the interim lightweight belt. He then lost to Nurmagomedov by second-round submission at UFC 254 on 24 October 2020. A second attempt at the undisputed belt ended at UFC 274 on 7 May 2022, when Oliveira submitted him in the first round.
Between those losses he beat Michael Chandler by unanimous decision at UFC 268 in November 2021, and on 29 July 2023 he knocked out Poirier in round two at UFC 291 to win the BMF title. Holloway took that belt with a knockout at 4:59 of round five at UFC 300 on 13 April 2024.
The recent run
After the Holloway loss he beat Rafael Fiziev by unanimous decision at UFC 313 on 8 March 2025. Next came UFC 324 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on 24 January 2026, where he beat Paddy Pimblett 48-47, 49-46, 49-46 over five rounds for the interim lightweight title. The interim belt was created because Topuria said he would not fight in the first quarter of 2026.
Then came UFC Freedom 250, the card on the South Lawn of the White House. Topuria, unbeaten at 17-0, hurt Gaethje with body shots in round two and took mount and looked for an armbar or triangle, but Gaethje survived. From round three he took over, rocking Topuria with a jab combination and breaking his face down with heavy shots. Topuria's corner stopped the fight after round four, at 5:00.
It was the first loss of Topuria's career and the first time Gaethje had held the undisputed belt after two earlier attempts. The fight earned Fight of the Night, and MixedMartialArts.com reports that Topuria's face was badly swollen by the end. Some outlets date the fight 15 June because the UFC athlete page logs it in UTC, but it took place on 14 June in Washington.
What happens next
No fight is booked for Gaethje as of 30 September 2026, and the UFC athlete page shows no upcoming bout. The top five lightweight contenders in the UFC rankings are Topuria, Arman Tsarukyan, Oliveira, Holloway and Pimblett.
A rematch with Topuria is the obvious headline, but Gaethje's manager Ali Abdelaziz said in a report on 23 September that Topuria will not get an immediate rematch and must earn another shot. Dana White has said that Topuria is ready to return and that a Gaethje rematch and a fight with Pimblett are both options, with nothing scheduled. One outlet reports that Gaethje himself is planning to fight in 2027, which we could not confirm elsewhere.
Read the Ilia Topuria profile for the other side of the rematch question. For Gaethje, the next result matters less for the belt than for how long a 37-year-old who takes this much damage can keep it.
